In 1894 Selah purchased a farm in Pomeroy, Garfield County, Washington, and here he spent the rest of his life.

A Veteran's Death

The Garfield County Standard, of Pomeroy, Washington on Nov. 29th contained the following notice of the death of Thomas J. Sanford who lived for many years in Ossian and who was a member of the Seth N. Hedges Post of Dansville until he went to Washington two years ago with his son.

Thomas J. Sanford, the aged father of E. L. Sanford, passed peacefully and painlessly in his long rest, Wednesday morning at 7:30 o'clock aged 94 years four months and 24 days. He was born July 3, 1818, in Tompkins county, N.Y. of an old and hardy New England family. He married Sibil Steadman in January 1843 and on his wedding day, was baptized in the Baptist church. In 1864 when 46 years old, beyond legal military age, he enlisted in the 188th N.Y. Vols., and served till mustered out. His occupation was always that of a farmer and with the exception of the period passed in the war and the time since 1910 when he came to Pomeroy to make his home with his son he had lived the whole of his long life in the three counties of Tompkins, Allegany and Livingston in New York State. His longevity and vigor made him the object of wonder and admiration. In his long life he had seen ushered late existence the invention of the railroad, steamboat, matches, window glass, stoves, organs, the telegraph, to say nothing of the later triumphs of science. He had eleven children of whom five survive. The oldest is Mary S. Smith of Duluth, Wis., over 70 years of age, Edward Sanford of Livingston Co., N.Y., I. C. Sanford of Portland, E. L. Sanford of Pomeroy and Rachel Sanford of Michigan. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Baptist church, the Rev. C.B. Treadwell officiating. Choral selections and solos were rendered by I. F. Koenis, Ira Rogers, Mrs. G. S. Wilbur, Mrs. McMaster and Miss Anna Bunch and Mrs. Dora Beals as organist. The ceremonies at the grave were in charge of the G.A.R. of which deceased was a member, in which filed the following few remaining comrades from McDowell Post No. 22 took part, J. T. and S. I. Malcolm, E. Halterman, C. H. Bingham, J. W. Ball, H. C. and John Thompson, M. M. Corey, D. B. Messenger, W. J. Rummons, Wm. Gammon.

Mr. Sanford was always noted for his vigor and up to the time he was 88 years old he would walk from his home eight or ten miles away, attend a meeting of the Post, and return home the same night, refusing the invitation of comrades to be their guest..¹ He was buried at Pomeroy City Cemetery, at Pomeroy, Garfield County, WA, USA.
