The town was establishe in January 1886 and took the name of Walner when John Walner dragged his store building by oxen from Cherokee Town to the location that the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fee company planned to build a railway stop. The name was changed to Wynnewood in 1887 or 1888 by the railroad. The name came from a Pennsylvania town by the name of Wynnewood.
